  15/04/07 The 100K Downpatrick Third World Group Charity Tour takes place on the 29th April. The Slieve Gullion Wheelers have changed the date of the Tour of South Armagh to Saturday 26/5. See calendar for details.

  21/03/07 Slaney Cycling Club have launched a new website dedicated to the Mount Leinster Challenge cycling event organised for Sunday May 20th.
  14/03/07 With the 2007 Wicklow 200 online entry now open you can whet your appetite for the climbs with the event profiles from 2006, 2005 and 2004
  24/02/07 The calendar is filling up nicely for 2007 with the following additional events announced for September:

  21/1/07 Paris Brest Paris 2007 By Paul O'Donoghue, Sorrento CC/Audax Ireland
The 16th edition of the Paris Brest Paris (PBP) is being organised by Audax Club Parisien (ACP) for August 20th-24th 2007.The 1200 kilometer ride which must be completed within 90 hours, starts on the western edge of Paris and follows a route over some undulating terrain to the Atlantic at Brest before turning and for the most part retracing the outward route back to Paris.The event is open to all cyclists who have an interest in going that bit further and Irish cyclists have participated since 1987.
To ensure that anyone wishing to take part has a suitable level of stamina/fitness to complete the route, organisers ACP require all those planning to participate to complete a Super Randonneur series in the same year as PBP. This consists of a series of 200,300,400 & 600 kilometer rides,  the details are listed in the calendar.

  12/1/07 The Irish Veteran Cyclists Association (IVCA) have announced their 2007 schedule of open touring events. The IVCA are organising 10 events, one per month, from January to October. See the calendar for details.
  9/1/07 The Cyctic Fibrosis Association of Ireland (CFAI) are organising a 200k cycle on the 14/4 starting in Limerick. See calendar for details.
  7/1/07 The dates for Paris-Brest-Paris (PBP) 2007 have been fixed for the 20th to the 24th of August, this the largest Randonee in the world. For more information on Irish qualifying events for the PBP see the Sorrento Cycling Club website.

- A new challenging 800k, 4 day tour of Ireland has been announced for May
- A Mizen 2 Malin Head cycling event is being organised for May
- A new Malin to Mizen cycling challenge has been announced for September.
- The Slieve Gullion Wheelers are organising 3 events (April, May and September)
- Sorrento CC are organising 4 Paris-Brest-Paris qualification events (March, April and May)
- 25th Wicklow 200 will take place in June

  26/12/06 Reflecting back on the 2006 season of cyclo sportive events in Ireland, it has been a great year with increased participation in established events and the arrival of a few new challenging tours. All thanks to the hard work and commitment of the cycling clubs and event organisers. I have published an early draft of the 2007 Event Calendar, its sparsely populated at the moment so if you know any 2007 event details please forward them to me.
  23/12/06 We ended the 2006 season on a high note with a visit to Mallorca for 2 weeks cycling a little relaxation in the Mediterranean sun. Mallorca is a great location for early/late season training. We rented excellent quality road bikes from Pro Cycle Hire, I would highly recommend that you speak with Bruce at Pro Cycle Hire if you plan to visit Mallorca for a few days on the bike.  I have posted a few photos of the local scenery to whet your appetite.

  26/07/06 Wolftrap CC have announced a new event on Sunday 20/8 with three distance challenges of 60k, 100k and 130k. The route includes a few interesting Slieve Bloom climbs, see calendar for details.

  08/05/06 A Dublin man, Shane Molloy, has just started the first leg of a round-the-world cycle. You can find more information on his website.
  01/05/06 Took part in the 2006 Sliabh Bloom Challenge. The event was extremely well organised by the Carlow Road Club and attracted 80 participants for a challenging 160K route. You can see a few indoor action photos here.
  25/04/06 New dates for the Tour de Tourmakeady (May) and the Blackstairs 150 (July) have been announced, see calendar for details.
  20/04/06 Western Lakes CC  have just announced a 140K event on the 29/04/06, with a novel concept of two start locations in Ballina and Castlebar. See the calendar for details.
  19/04/06 Fifty leisure cyclists and support crew are planning to cycle from Mizen Head to Malin Head, a total of 680 kilometres in aid of Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind (IGDB).
  09/04/06 I passed the recently erected Liam Horner memorial at Glencree today, it will be on the route of this year's Wicklow 200. Liam Horner was a former national champion and highly respected international who passed away following an accident in 2003.
  31/01/06 The new route for the 2006 Wicklow 200 has been revealed. Brace yourself... it looks like an interesting challenge with a similar climb profile to that of the 2005 and 2004 events.
  25/01/06 The Sporting Hearts organisation are holding a flat 64k event in May and a hilly 80k event in October. The calendar has the details.
  16/01/06 Sorrento CC have announced the 2006 dates for the Clash 200 and Virginia 300 events, both starting in the Dublin area. The Island Wheelers are organising a 105K reliability trial on the 5th of February starting in Coalisland. See the calendar for details.
  15/01/06 Paddy Doran has set up a new coaching website with specific cycling advice. He has recently posted an interesting article on early season training.

  12/01/06 Leisure and touring cyclists invited to join new body
Cycling Ireland has set up a new Touring and Leisure Commission to represent the interest of touring and leisure members of the organisation – and the next meeting of the commission takes place on Saturday next, January 14, in the Tullamore court Hotel, Tullamore, Co. Offaly, at 3o’c.

2/10/05 Body to represent leisure and touring cyclists in Ireland
Leisure and touring cyclists all over Ireland are invited to make their views known about how they would like to see leisure and tour cycling develop in the country.
Cycling Ireland, the governing body of cycling in Ireland, is to set up a commission that will represent its members who take part in leisure and touring biking.
The meeting to set up this commission will take place in the West County Hotel, Chapleizod, Dublin, on Tuesday next, October 4, at 8o’c.

28/07/05 The Tullamore Cycling and Touring Club are holding their Annual Pat Colgan Memorial Cycle on Sunday 28th of August. There is a choice of a 40K or 100K route, see calendar for contact details.
27/07/05 I was searching recently for an answer to an obscure technical bike question and I found the answer on Sheldon Brown's homepage. The seach reminded me how good this site is. So if you are gripped by the sudden urge to build a new wheel, then check out Sheldon's site.
24/07/05 We completed the 100k Tour of the Lakes on Sunday. The event was extremely well organised and marshalled by the Lakeside Wheelers. I have posted the route profile and map together with some event photos.

18/07/05 We took part in the Billy Shanahan Cycle on Sunday. The event was organised as a fund raiser for the NCBI. The organisation and support was excellent, many thanks to Billy and his supporters for an extremely memorable day's cycling. See the route profile and map and some photos from the day.
23/06/05 The 4-day "Causeway to Cork" charity cycling event, taking place from the 7/9 to the 10/9, has been announced by Co-operation Ireland. The organiser's details are listed in the calendar.
21/06/05 The Irish 12 and 24 hour record holder Paul O’Donoghue unfortunately missed out in his attempt to take the 390 mile Mizen Head to Fair Head record on Sunday. Paul recorded an excellent time of 20 hours and 5 minutes for the distance, but this was 1 hour and 2 minutes off the time set by Joe Barr in 1993. See Shane Stokes article on
20/06/05 TG4 have announced the details of their planned live television coverage and program schedule for the Tour de France from the 2/7 to the 24/7.
19/06/05 The "Tour of the Great Western Lakes" has been moved to Saturday 9th of July. There are two distance options of 70k and 140k. Further details of this event are available on the calendar.
18/06/05 Cycling Ireland have launched a free e-zine for leisure cyclists in Ireland. Further information is available here.
14/06/05 Took part in the Wicklow 200 on Sunday, one of the premier events of the Irish long-distance calendar. It is not official, but I heard that ther were over 1100 participants! Many thanks to the IVCA for organising the event.

29/05/05 A small, but select, group of us travelled up from Dublin today to do the Tour of South Armagh. A good route on quiet roads with lots of short climbs. It was a very well organised event which attracted over 100 cyclists,  all thanks to the efforts of the Sleive Gullion Wheelers. Their event report is available here.
20/05/05 I picked up a copy of the new Irish cycling magazine Irish Cycling News. The content and presentation is impressive,  it is great to see a publication dedicated to cycling in Ireland. It is available from most bike shops and by postal subcription.
19/05/05 An outfit called Jtek Engineering is producing a $35 gizmo that lets Campag shifters work with Shimano cassettes, and vice-versa. So component decisions may not be as black and white in the future!
15/05/05 The Velo City conference will be held in Dublin from 31/5 - 3/6. Velo City is an international conference of cycle planners and campaigners launched in 1980 by the European Cyclists' Federation and held every two years in a different European city.

03/05/05 The Blazing Saddles have announced the Big 4 cycling events for 2005.
24/04/05 A group of 7 cyclists completed the Virginia 300. Many thanks to Paul O'Donoghue for organising the event.
27/03/05 We completed the Clash 200, the first of this season's Audax Ireland events. It was an great route and the weather was perfect. Looking forward to the 300k on the 24/4.

04/02/05 I have posted a first draft of the 2005 Irish long distance cycling event calendar. All the details may not yet be correct but at least it will  help in planning your coming year's event diary.
20/01/05 We kicked off the 2005 season with our first training ride on the 16/01. A little bit of work is needed to recover from the welcome excess of the Christmas.
