Paris Brest Paris
2007 By Paul O'Donoghue,

CC/Audax Ireland
The 16th edition of the
Paris
Brest Paris (PBP) is being organised by Audax Club Parisien (ACP)
for August 20th-24th 2007.The 1200 kilometer ride which must be
completed within 90 hours, starts on the western edge of Paris and
follows a route over some undulating terrain to the Atlantic at
Brest before turning and for the most part retracing the outward
route back to Paris.The event is open to all cyclists who have an
interest in going that bit further and Irish cyclists have
participated since 1987.
To ensure that anyone wishing to take part has a suitable level of
stamina/fitness to complete the route, organisers ACP require all
those planning to participate to complete a Super Randonneur series
in the same year as PBP. This consists of a series of 200,300,400 &
600 kilometer rides, the details are listed in the
calendar. |

Cyclists Association (IVCA) have announced their 2007 schedule of
open touring events. The IVCA are organising 10 events, one per

Reflecting back on the
2006 season of cyclo sportive events in Ireland, it has been a great
year with increased participation in established events and the
arrival of a few new challenging tours. All thanks to the hard work
and commitment of the cycling clubs and event organisers. I have
published an early draft of the 2007 Event
Calendar, its sparsely populated at the moment so if you know
any 2007 event details please forward them to
me. |

We ended the 2006 season
on a high note with a visit to Mallorca for 2 weeks cycling a little
relaxation in the Mediterranean sun. Mallorca is a great location for early/late season training. We rented excellent
quality road bikes from
Pro Cycle Hire,
I would highly recommend that you speak with Bruce at Pro Cycle Hire
if you plan to visit Mallorca for a few days on the bike. I
have posted a few
photos
of the local scenery to whet your appetite. |

erected Liam Horner memorial at Glencree today, it will be on the
route of this year's Wicklow 200. Liam Horner was a former national
champion and highly respected international who passed away
following an accident in 2003. |

Cycling Ireland has set up a new Touring and Leisure Commission to
represent the interest of touring and leisure members of the
organisation – and the next meeting of the commission takes place on
Saturday next, January 14, in the Tullamore court Hotel, Tullamore,
Co. Offaly, at 3o’c.

Body to
represent leisure and touring cyclists in Ireland
Leisure and touring cyclists all over Ireland are invited to make
their views known about how they would like to see leisure and tour
cycling develop in the country. Cycling
Ireland, the governing body of cycling in Ireland, is to set up a
commission that will represent its members who take part in leisure
and touring biking.
The meeting to set up this commission will take place in the West
County Hotel, Chapleizod, Dublin, on Tuesday next, October 4, at
8o’c.

The Irish 12 and 24 hour record
holder Paul O’Donoghue unfortunately missed out in his attempt
to take the 390 mile Mizen Head to Fair Head record on Sunday.
Paul recorded an excellent time of 20 hours and 5
minutes for the distance, but this was 1 hour and 2 minutes off
the time set by Joe Barr in 1993. See Shane Stokes article

A small, but select,
group of us travelled up from Dublin today to do the Tour
of South Armagh. A good route on quiet roads with lots of
short climbs. It was a very well organised event which attracted
over 100 cyclists, all thanks to the efforts of the Sleive

the new Irish cycling magazine Irish
Cycling News. The content and presentation is
impressive, it is great to see a publication dedicated to
cycling in Ireland. It is available from most bike shops and by
postal subcription. |
